I don’t feel it is any less safe than normal camping, because let’s be honest, your tent fabric is not stopping a bear or intruder who is determined to get in.
It is, however, extra important that you check the weather when cowboy camping, as you won’t have anything to protect you from the rain or wind.
Be aware of any wildlife that may be native to the area and bear-proof any food or scented items somewhere away from where you are laying your head.

I myself still prefer sleeping inside my tent, but I understand why people choose to lay out under the sky.
