We visited Great Seal State Park at the end of August, and as far as campgrounds go… it was fine.

I don’t want to say that it knocked my socks off, but it was still a good night of camping.

Our original intention was to camp at The Narrows in Beavercreek, which is a local spot near us, but unfortunately it was booked. The next two we tried didn’t have fire pits, so we eventually resorted to an hour-long drive to Chillicothe.

Here’s how it went!

The Campground

We arrived at the campground just after sunset, so we didn’t get a good view of the campground on the way in.

I will say, however, the drive from the main road to the campground was nice.

There is a really cool tunnel that you drive through at the start of the park, but then it’s mostly just a typical, peaceful drive through the trees.

The site numbers were a little hard to see in the dark, but we ultimately found the site with no issue.

There was no check-in station as far as we could tell, which sadly meant we were on our own for finding firewood.

Since you can’t burn downed wood, I drove into town and grabbed some from a Kroger gas station while Aaron set up his tent. Thirty minutes and $10 later we were in business with both tents fully set up and the fire burning.

What to Expect

There was a bathroom nearby (much better than my portable camping toilet) there was also a drinking fountain with a water bottle refill.

I didn’t see showers but I also didn’t spend too much time exploring.

Each site came equipped with a small gravel driveway to park your vehicle, a picnic table and a fire pit.

Our site was fairly limited on good places to set up a tent, but the other sites around us seemed to be flatter than ours, so maybe ours was just a fluke.

Overall Experience

This was a one-night trip, but I feel like I experienced the campground enough to make a rating.

The site gets a C+, with distinction. It was perfectly fine but I prefer sites with a little more to see. Give me a nice backdrop, not the city of Chillicothe a mile away.

Nothing about the campground made me scream “gosh I can’t wait to come back here,” but would I camp there again? Sure.

Would it be high on my list of recommendations? Probably not.

Hey, it’s all just a tent on the ground. Camping is camping.

Lackluster campgrounds are all just a part of the journey.
