If there is one thing I definitely don’t regret buying–it’s my portable camping toilet.
It’s one of my favorite camping accessories.
Picture this, you’re at a campground. It’s March, and you’re on night one of a three-night trip to New River Gorge National Park. You’ve just finished off some burgers, courtesy of your campmates cast-iron skillet, and now you need to go to the bathroom.
You walk over to a small, rundown building, and you are greeted with nothing more than the bare frame of a toilet and a deep hole in the ground. There are no lights.
You shine your flashlight down into the abyss, and think, “maybe I don’t need to go that bad.”
Imagine what could be in there! Snakes? Spiders? No thank you.
Eventually you give in. What other option do you have, you’re here for three days.
This was a real experience, and I immediately went and bought a portable camping toilet when we got back so that I would never find myself in that situation again.
If my own traumatic experience hasn’t already sold you on the idea of buying your own outdoor port-o-potty, then here are five more reasons why you should buy a camping toilet for your next trip.

1. Portable Camping Toilets Are Convenient
It’s the middle of the night, and you need to go the bathroom. It’s cold outside and you’re trying to keep what little warm air you have inside your tent. Do you really want to grab your flashlight and wander through the darkness? What if your campsite doesn’t have available toilets?
With a portable camping toilet, you can do your business in the privacy of your own tent. It’s a literal gamechanger. You no longer have to worry about dirty campground toilets or wonder what creepy crawlies might be lurking in the dark abyss.
2. They Are Low-Cost
Camping toilets are relatively inexpensive, so if you’re afraid of breaking the bank, don’t be.
They typically range from $20-$40 and can be found at most outdoor supply stores or online on Amazon.
They sell a variety of different styles, so pick whichever one you like best. I bought a toilet seat lid for about $15, and it clips onto a five-gallon bucket (which I have an endless supply of from my day job at a restaurant.)
Biodegradable bags can be bought which simply pop into the toilet, and you dispose of them afterwards.
No stress, no mess. Just a private and enjoyable bathroom break.
3. Portable Toilets Are Environmentally Responsible
Camping is all about being one with nature, and that includes how we handle going to the bathroom. Improperly disposing of waste can spread disease, damage ecosystems, and contaminate water sources.
Did you know that you’re supposed to be at least 200 feet away from any water source if you’re going to bury your waste?
Portable camping toilets and toilet bags are a safe and eco-friendly way to dispose of your waste.
Remember to always follow the instructions on your specific toilet bag or system to ensure you are using the product properly.
4. They Provide Comfort In the Great outdoors
Most campgrounds, even the nicer ones, only clean their bathrooms every so often. If rowdy campers leave it a mess, you’re left to either clean up after them or work around the mess.
Having your own portable toilet means you’ll always know what you’re walking into.
No more suspiciously wet floors, overflowing trashcans, or shitty toilet paper.
Just make sure to pack the toilet paper, wipes, and hand sanitizer when you’re loading your car or you’ll be ‘shit’ out of luck. Sorry… I had to.
5. They have Multiple DIfferent Uses
Your portable camping toilet isn’t only reserved for camping.
It can also be used for boating, road trips, or festivals.
They are a great thing to have in case of an emergency.
Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it, right?
In Conclusion: Should You Buy a Portable Camping Toilet
Yes. Obviously. Did you not read the post?
If there is one product on here that I truly stand behind, it is my camping toilet. I cannot explain to you the relief it brings me knowing that I will no longer have to stress about the bathroom situation at a campsite. Call me old-fashioned, but I like my bathroom breaks to be calm and comfortable.
