Here are some tips on how to properly dispose of human waste while hiking, backpacking, or camping.

This information was included in our post about Portable Camping Toilets, but it might be good to give it its own short post so people can find the information without having to dig through a longer piece of content.

How to Dispose of Human Waste Properly

-Make sure you are at least 200 feet from any lake, river, or other water source. Runoff from human waste can contaminate the water.

-Dig a hole about 10 inches deep and 6 inches wide. Remember to cover the hole with natural materials when finished.

-Try your best to take wipes and toilet paper with you when you leave. These things will get eaten by animals, and it’s just generally bad etiquette to leave trash in the woods.

-Try using a portable camping toilet instead of leaving your waste in the ground. These typically use bio-bags for clean, safe disposal. For more info, check out our post on portable toilets here.
